HESSEL & TESS
Saying Terschelling is the same as saying Hessel. For over 45 years now Hessel has been performing for many guests in his Café de Groene Weide several weeks a night. He will leave the island with daughter Tess for just a short getaway to give an unforgettable performance at FRIESIAN PROMS.
Hessel won acclaim with the wider public in the nineties after successful performances at Vredenburg, Thialf, Heineken Music Hall and Ahoy. In February 2017 he performed in Ziggo Dome in front of 10,000 fans. This time together with his daughter Tess, who has not only become his partner in running Café de Groene Weide but who is also making quite a name for herself in music.
For Hessel it all started in 1972 when he opened his Café de Groene Weide in Hoorn on Terschelling. It was not very busy in the beginning so Hessel filled his days with playing his guitar and singing. This proved to be very popular with the guests and his live performances had become a fixed element of Café de Groene Weide. Known as the ‘singing pub lord’ Hessel produced several albums and in 1985 even scored Top 40 hits with Brother Sagittarius and Somebody Told Me. By now the small village pub has become a permanent asset for the large public and has earned national fame, with Hessel´s music being at the hub of it all.
With her great musical talent she has inherited from her father, daughter Tess has become a main player as well. She not only possesses a wonderful voice, she also writes and composes songs. In 2013 she produced her first CD with mostly songs of her own. A second CD is in the making.
FRIESIAN PROMS and Hessel & Tess
If anything can conjure up the warm Terschellinger ‘island experience’ it surely must be a performance by Hessel & Tess during FRIESIAN PROMS. In this mix live music, singing and horses go hand-in-hand and create a unique act. This special combination is why Hessel & Tess eagerly agreed to contribute to the show.
Does it include Friesian horses? Well, haven´t we already spilled the beans…?
